Install in Audacity

FFmpeg is not an Audacity plugin. Do not add it from Plugin Manager.

  1. Run the installer.
  2. Open Audacity and go to Edit -> Preferences -> Libraries.
  3. Click Locate....
  4. If Audacity finds FFmpeg automatically, click No and close Preferences.
  5. If it does not, click Browse... and select the installed avformat-*.dll file.

avformat DLL guidance

This FFmpeg 5.0.0 installer includes avformat-59.dll, avcodec-59.dll, and avutil-57.dll. Audacity 3.2 and later supports this library version; a newer DLL is not required just because you want to import M4A.

Audacity 3.5 and later also supports avformat-61.dll from other compatible shared builds, but that file is not included in this installer. Do not download isolated avformat.dll files from unrelated sites. Use a full shared FFmpeg package supported by your Audacity version; use the compatibility guide for older versions.
